My Students

I teach a self-contained autism unit at a school with 2 other self-contained special education teachers. All three of us work closely together to provide students with age-appropriate opportunities to grasp academic, social, and environmental concepts. Our students require repetitious modeling and continuous visual supports. In order to provide our student with optimal learning opportunities, we need to be able to give them real-life experiences that increase their background knowledge. Many of our students lack working memory skills, therefore increasing background knowledge with hands-on modeling and experiences is so vital to gain academic success.

My Project

This field trip will support our students with a hands-on learning experience with agricultural vocabulary and build independent living skills. Down on the farm trip will increase our students’ background knowledge and provide them with an unforgettable experience. Due to our students' intellectual needs, our students need scaffolding, modeling, and visual supports to make progress and gain more knowledge about desired topics such as animals/livestock, growing and playing, animal and plant life cycles and cells. Agriculture is the heartbeat of the south and is such an important content area to discuss with our students. Please help us provide our students with this opportunity.
