My students need hands-on materials to aid their understanding of our changing Earth; a Frey Scientific Earth Processes Kit will provide hands-on experiences.

My Students
Their faces express interest. Their drawings indicate understanding, so why are so many fifth graders not mastering the main ideas encompassed in the science core, Our Earth is Constantly Changing?
My students live near and travel around in the surrounding mountains.
There are signs of "Our Changing Earth" everywhere, but my fifth graders don't seem to understand the slow processes that are constantly shaping Utah's magnificent landscape. They have inquisitive minds, but the graphic depictions of our Earth do not establish a realistic knowledge base. My students need materials they can manipulate, observe results, and record and document what they observed. They need to experience limestone reacting with a weak acid, and soil being moved by the force of moving water. They need to use materials that depict layers of sediment being deposited, twisted due to uplift, and altered by weathering, erosion, and earthquakes.
My Project
The Earth Processes Kit contains enough manipulative materials for the students to create, observe, and experiment with the forces of nature. They will be able to duplicate the building of mountains followed by weathering and erosion. They'll create their own landforms similar to the forces of nature. When students travel up one of our mountain canyons, they'll be able to recognize signs of uplift, be able to identify examples of landslides, and observe the u-shaped glacial canyons, as well as, v-shaped water eroded canyons. Hands-on will allow them internalize the concepts developed in our "Changing Earth" unit and identify how these forces have changed the environment.
One hundred fifty students will rotate through the Earth lab.
One hundred fifty students will gain a new perspective on the Earth that is their habitat. A grade level of students will become excited about science.
