Doodle Notes: Visual Note-Taking and Zentangle Creativity

My Project
"Ms. Tobler, do we get to do those Doodle Note thingies again? That was so fun!" my student enthused after our class used the Doodle Note technique to diagram how nutrient run-off from fertilizers contaminates the Mississippi River, causing a chain-reaction of harmful algae blooms, bacteria, and oxygen-depleted waters known as the Dead Zone.
Doodle Notes are a visual note-taking method that increases focus and improves memory, and students love taking Doodle Notes!
Brain science shows that visual note-taking allows student brains to process and retain lesson information more effectively. The brain converts blends of visual and linguistic information into long-term memory more easily as visual note-taking integrates both hemispheres of the brain.
Students love to use special felt-tip markers, gel pens, and other drawing tools to create beautiful drawings that integrate our new scientific vocabulary. I am always pleasantly surprised how quiet my classroom is when we take Doodle Notes together.
Integrating visual strategies strengthens creativity, deepens understanding, and provides opportunities for all students to relax and explore through visualization. Another method for developing creativity is the Zentangle Method. The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. As students (or anyone!) use the Zentangle Method to create beautiful images, they likely will enjoy increased focus, creativity, self-confidence and an increased sense well-being.
