Our 60 student high school program is a refuge for kids who have found our nation's traditional, factory-like, "one size fits all" education system overwhelming, impersonal, and uninspiring.
Most of our kids come from low-income households, some deal with homelessness, and many deal with anxiety or other mental health issues, and all of them have been unsuccessful in a "regular" school simply because they are a square peg in a round hole created by our educational system.
Rather than mindlessly shuffle from room to room by the buzz of a bell, our students work independently on projects at their own pace and spend two days a week interning in a field of their choice. This exposure to a real-world environment allows them to graduate with an impressive resume and much-needed self-confidence.
My Project
Unfortunately, some of our students come to school hungry or avoid school altogether because they don't have clean clothes or the necessary toiletries. Often, these students even find themselves worrying about where they are going to sleep that night or when they might eat again. These are heavy problems that weigh on a teenager's mind, preventing her from focusing on learning, and it happens more than we realize.
This project will be used to provide our students, especially those who find themselves homeless throughout the school year, with the needed toiletries to help maintain proper hygiene.
It will also provide some easily transported snacks and food to those students and families who may be staying in shelters, temporary housing, or housing without appliances.
Hopefully, this will help alleviate some of the worrying on our students and help them to focus on being a teenager and learning!
