My Students

Our students are hardworking individuals from a diverse community who deserve to see themselves in the texts they read. They get excited when a character has a similar background to their own. Being able to relate to a character because of those traits or because of context really allows the students to build the metacognition needed to develop a greater understanding of the world around them.

Diversity in literature will diversify our learners' experiences further, thus building a stronger foundation of community.

Our students deserve to understand one another more, and these books will help them do that.

My Project

High school students are interesting. They're on the verge of adulthood, but they still have that lingering childhood innocence that works well with creativity and play. In high school English classes, we sometimes overlook that aspect of their learning.

I want to use picture books as read-alouds to discuss deeper meaning and author's moves in writing with high school students.

By engaging students in a past time that solidifies a love for reading, they will hopefully pass it on to future generations. They will also appreciate the discussions these books can garner instead of viewing the work as baby-ish.

These books will be used with units to appreciate and discuss culture, problem-solving, and other elements they will need to confront as adults but practice as high school students.
