Help me give my students a nice movie night with a hot meal and a care package to take home. Most of these shelters are cold and don't supply basic items are needed.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are comprised of 90 amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch. Our school serves students grades 6th through 12th; who come from the hardest hit, lowest social economic status in New York City. They struggle everyday to get to school, to stay in school and to come clean and fed.
The focus for this project is to support our students that are homeless.
These students are in need of a lot of basic items such as toiletries, basic school supplies and Love. We want students to have a stress free night to enjoy themselves. Some students have stated to their teachers that this is the only place they get a hot meal, feel safe and heard.
My experience working with these students shows that they need consistency, commitment, honesty and compassion. This allows them to strive in the classroom and in life. Some conditions they live in are horrific. We advocate and teach them to advocate for themselves, their families on different levels.
My Project
The toiletries ordered will help students to assure that they have proper hygiene at school and home. We will give each student a love package after the dinner and movie to take home with them in a brand new book bag. Parents are invited to attend as well.
The staff will use the table clothes to set the table in a family style dinner and a movie, for these students and their families.
The plates and utensils will be used to set the tables. Each student will be given a bag of popcorn and drink during the movie. There will also be a children's table set so students can express themselves through making things they can take or give as a gift. Snacks will be given out as well on the Dinner and Movie Night and some will remain in the classroom to give to students.
