This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I love my students because they will match you in zeal every time. What makes my students special is their ability as public school students to unpack a text in class with a zeal that is infectious. This zeal is my goal for these two texts in my 12th-grade English course titled "The Bible as Literature". The backbone of the course is for students to understand themes of the biblical text as shown through other forms of media. Through their senior year, my students will analyze complex texts from Dante's Divine Comedy to Ralph Ellison's The Invisible Man. Biblical themes are made evident in challenging subject matter, but what about a book written for children? Could there be layered themes in a children's text that could be analyzed at the same level as the others?
The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, and The Last Battle will make a difference in the learning of my students because it will give them the opportunity to unpack a children's text with timeless themes of hope and resilience at a timely hour in their journey as students.
My goal through this project is to present The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe at the beginning of my course in the fall as a key text establishing the theme of "Good Vs Evil". From this springboard, we will travel through various mediums and texts, establishing connections between them and themes present in the Bible. Our ultimate unit at the end of the spring is to read The Last Battle, the apocalyptic finale to The Chronicles of Narnia series. During the twilight of their high school career and the dawn of their adult lives, students will be encouraged by the timeless themes of death and rebirth in this children's novel.
