My class is comprised of 20 Preschoolers aged 4-5 in a suburban elementary school. They mostly come from middle class backgrounds. Some experienced prior preschool, but for many of my students this is their first experience in a school setting.
Because this is the first time many of my young students have been in a structured academic setting, they need the opportunity to move in order to learn.
Their attention spans are very short and their energy is quite long!
My Project
These flexible seating balance balls will help my students focus on the lessons at hand while being given the freedom to move. They are young and inexperienced at sitting still. It is difficult for them to think about their learning when they have to make a discerned effort just to sit still, or keep their chair on the floor. By having the freedom to move while they work and listen, their minds will be free to absorb so much more learning.
I will use these balance balls at tables during small group work and as needed for whole group carpet seating and throughout my centers.
All students may not choose this option at once or they may. With a class set we will have options. Young children thrive when they feel they are given choices in their day. It gives them ownership of their learning and helps them feel that they count in the classroom.
