As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty middle school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many struggle in reading and are reading at least two levels below their grade. However, the grade also has students who are reading above grade level and need to be more challenged.
Many of the students in our 5th grade struggle to have an more in depth understanding and to think critically with the text.
Our students love to read longer novels and read stories with characters close to their age. Many have had bad experiences with reading in previous grade levels and have responded to reading graphic novels since they do not view that as reading.
Getting a classroom set of Wrinkle in Time will help foster the students' love of reading because they are currently reading from a textbook. Most of my students' are school dependent and have not have access to books at home. Many have struggled with learning to read and have developed a hatred of reading. They have not experienced the joy of reading and get lost in a good book.
Using a combination of a traditional novel and graphic novel will help reach students of various reading levels.
Using both types will also provide an opportunity to compare/contrast the novel, graphic novel and movie. Students will be given multiple opportunities to interact with the text.
