Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located on the water's edge. It is a small Title I high school located in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn. We are sandwiched between two major urban bridges - The Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.
All of my students are English Language Learners (ELL).
They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential. As a discipline, science is ever-changing, and offers hands-on learning opportunities that work best with ELLs. Having access to biotechnology can offer a means to better understand the latest discoveries in this field of research. I would like my students to have access to biotechnology while they are still in high school. If I can generate interest in this field, it might inspire my students to seek out such educational opportunities on their own.
My Project
We have been studying the field of genetics and the applications of biotechnology to better understand human traits, genetically modified crops and protein analysis. Often, we must incubate our specimens at specific temperatures to ensure proper enzymatic reactions. If we had a digital dry heat block, with the appropriately sized blocks, we could greatly improve and speed-up the process. Using a heat block also allows us to set the correct temperature and minimizes the chance of contamination that often results when using a conventional water bath.
Unfortunately, the apparatus that is needed for such projects are expensive. Considering our present financial state, which includes continued budget cuts for education, obtaining such equipment is unlikely if not for the support of caring individuals like you.
My job is to do everything in my power to help my students graduate high school and advance to college.
As a science teacher, my goal is to unleash my students' natural curiosity about the world around us. I cannot show my students the latest advances in the field of biotechnology without your help.
