Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
It all started with “Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus!” then another Pigeon book and another. We read them all, twice, or maybe more! One day, a student found out that Mo Willems wrote books about an Elephant and a Piggie and we are now fans. We check them out from the library, from other classroom libraries, and kids have even brought in a camera to take a photo so their parents can buy them to keep at home.
The Mo Willem collection and stuffies have really, I mean really, motivated my students to read, write, identify elements of literature (title, author, problem -solution, sequence, main idea and details, punctuation, dialogue ect.) and love it while they are learning and reading.
Having the collection in our own classroom library will give the opportunity to all students to read, reread, check out, and enjoy independently over and over again these wonderful books they already love.
My goal for this project is to have the Mo Willem collection available for students to enjoy and read many times over the course of the year. Children will often remember that one book or books that made a difference when learning to read, I believe that for my students this year, these books will be the ones.
We have a resource setting where students are supported on their individual academic needs. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds. We are a community of learners and “Bucket Fillers”, our school has adopted the Bucket Filling philosophy Book written by Carol McCloud.
Our students aim to be kind, caring and understanding little humans and they are very good at that, just like Elephant and Piggie are in all their books.
