Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book" - Dr. Seuss. My first graders tell me how much they love to read and I love teaching them to read.
My students come from diverse backgrounds, speak many languages, and have many voices and stories to share.
We are a Title I school, which means many of our students come from disadvantaged homes. Regardless, each student comes to school every day with a smile and a joyful greeting. They love school, they love learning, and they look forward to connecting to the world around them through the classroom.
My Project
Most children's books you find in the library and book stores are above a first grader's reading level. On top of that, the children in my class are English Language Learners and are still developing language skills so they are unable to connect to most children's books.
My students are submitting this project.
My first graders LOVE Mo Willems books and they are requesting the books in this project. Elephant and Piggie are funny. Cat the Cat teaches them how to read words. Pigeon is silly. My first graders love these characters, they can relate to the stories, and most importantly they can actually read the words in these books independently and confidently.
With these books to our classroom, my first graders will be able to have a book they love to read every day. They will no longer have to wait to go the school library once a week to get a Mo Willems book.
