The school that I teach has such a mix of cultures and languages. Standing in the hall you hear clusters of teens speaking English, while others are speaking Arabic, Swahili or Somali. Even though we are a uniform school, there are many colors of skirts and clothes walking up and down the hall. Lockers slam, books are carried and when they enter classrooms it is understood that our ELL students work on reading, writing, listening and speaking English. Many of our ESOL students are still fairly new to the United States.
Even though English is very hard to learn, our ESOL students are working very hard to use their social English, as well as, improve their skills in academic language.
These students work very hard to close gaps they have in education. Some of these students, who are currently in middle school, have only been in school for about three years. Their progress is amazing, but they are still in progress. I am honored to be part of that progress.
Our current classroom is a mish mash of desks, tables, chairs, and stools from a variety of places. What we have is functional, but not aesthetically pleasing. Some of our tables are chipped. Some have corners that have ripped my student's clothing. I want my ESOL students to know that they are important in all ways at school. I want them to be able to complete school tasks on flat surfaces that will help their writing.
I want them to walk into a room and feel like they are powerful and able to secure new words and concepts on a daily basis.
How our room looks can help provide a caring, safe place where mistakes can be made and learning happens daily.
