My Students
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." -- Benjamin Franklin
One way my students love to learn is through reading.
Each student is learning to find what interests them and which books are appropriate for their level of reading and understanding. Reading plays an integral part in most of their lives and will continue to be in their future. We will use picture books, or mentor texts, as a tool to foster learning as it spans across multiple subjects and promotes academic skills and social awareness.
My students are enthusiastic fifth graders who are excited for their final year in elementary school. They are well behaved and highly motivated to learn. Their positive attitude enables them to be hard workers and focused. My class is made up of 30% English Language Learners, which has me using various teaching methods to help them improve in the English language along with the other fifth grade standards, including the Common Core. While my classroom library continues to grow at our Title I school, we still lack sufficient books that are of good quality and of relevant interest to my students.
My Project
While one may assume that picture books are only for "little kids", I beg to differ. I find that not only are my fifth grade students engaged and actively listening when I read picture books aloud, but they now realize that there are more to these books than they initially thought! These picture books, or what we call mentor texts, now have meaning and students are now able to understand in depth what various messages and literary skills are trying to be conveyed through these stories.
Little did they know that through these mentor texts, they would be learning various academic skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and even appropriate social behavior!
Each book contains multiple strategies across subjects which makes learning engaging and fun for all my students. To see my students actively listening and having meaningful conversation during their sharing demonstrates that at this age, they still long to be read to and find picture books entertaining!
Upper grade students are always told to read chapter books during independent reading, even when a student may not be ready for chapter books. During read alouds, the teacher is the one reading aloud, while students of all reading levels will be able to enjoy and understand books without the pressure of having to read it themselves or aloud. Learning will take place through their conversations with their partners and discussions with the class!
