As a new teacher in a low income school district, I have noticed that my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges they face, they still want to learn and succeed. My students deserve every opportunity to do so. Many of my students' families do not have the money to buy school supplies for them at all.
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the basic school supplies they need to succeed?
Students that do not have their supplies are proven to be left behind as well as feel like they are not good enough to even be taught.
My Project
I transferred from middle school to an elementary classroom and my library transferred with me. The majority of my classroom library does not interest my students or is on a level that is too high for their independent reading level. I have been writing down the titles that interest my kids and this list is comprised of those titles. My students would love to be able to read these books without being on the "waiting list" to read them at the library. I know my students would want to read and even be more excited to read in our room with the titles at their fingertips.
