This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Art is always a great opportunity for children to express themselves and studies have shown that involvement in the arts helps kids increase test scores and promotes academic achievement.
My students are incredible!
I have 22 motivated students who are eager to learn. My students come from a low socioeconomic background with limited resources available. Many parents work 2 jobs and are barely able to support the family. Most of my students do not even have books available to read at home. Therefore, I try to read a book before our day ends as a special treat that they look forward to. I know that if we provide them with the right support, resources, and opportunities, they can experience success.
My Project
I want to integrate fine arts in my Writer's Workshop by having students create self-portraits to go along with their "All About Me" books. They have been working hard writing about themselves over the last 3 weeks. As a culmination, I would like the chance to bring their books to life by painting themselves as well as creating visuals for each page of their book. This is a medium to express visions that are beyond the capacity of words. As you know, art nurtures inventiveness and it engages children in a process that aids in the development of self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperation, and self-motivation.
Creating art expands a child's ability to interact with the world around them, and provides a new set of skills for self-expression and communication.
They've work hard publishing their personal history so let's give them the opportunity to express their artistic talents through their drawings and paintings.
