My Students

Practice makes perfect... or rather, practice makes PERMANENT! It is human nature to want to "get it" the first time someone introduces a new concept; as students enter high school, it is especially important for them to be comfortable with making mistakes & learning from the process.

The freshman class of our New York public high school consists of students from around the five boroughs.

They arrive from countless middle schools and from cultural backgrounds as rich as our locale. Each student also arrives at a varying degree of mathematics know-how and interest level. Some have learned to take copious notes during middle school, while others barely like to touch a pen to paper. In order for me to inspire my students academically, I must first get to know them as individuals. Small white boards are a springboard into conversation for both academic and social purposes. My intention is to spark momentum for these young adults to see Algebra (and themselves) as a constant work in progress.

My Project

In today's world of rapidly changing technology, it is common for teenagers to send emails and texts. What may not be as common, however, is the process of "working your thoughts on paper." I believe that there is a special connection between the brain and the hands. In a typical classroom setting, where the teacher is demonstrating his/her thoughts on the front board, it is just as imperative for the students to display their work. It may not be the first time that a student then wants to share what they have done with a small group or with the class, but eventually that will occur. Later in the year, students are explaining their work- a true sign of mastery and public speaking skills to boot! A class set of small white boards and dry erase markers permit students express their mathematical methods and their personality. When mistakes are made, a quick swipe of the eraser will delete all evidence and save a teenager from dreaded embarrassment!

In 45 minute classes of over 30 students, it is crucial that each person show evidence of understanding.

A blank white board is a clear warning signal that a student is not grasping the topic that day. Since mathematics is a subject that builds upon topics throughout the year, it is critical that each step of the process is set before moving on. Very much like a building, each layer must be solid or the entire structure risks collapse.
