Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from different places, different backgrounds, they speak different languages, and they have differing needs and wants in a classroom. In my chemistry classroom, I strive for equity in all aspects of the classroom from assignments to seating to language. As a low-income, urban high school--and in the building of the second oldest public high school in the United States--we often need additional material supports outside of what can be found within our walls presently.

What makes these students so amazing is their passion, their presence, and their consistency in looking for progress academically, socially, emotionally, as learners in an absolutely historic time to be a student.

This is my first year at my school, and I want to start off on a great note. I want my students to see, hear, and feel the positives from all of the work I have been doing to get prepared for these awesome learners. Technically, I am meant to teach Chemistry. But more than that, I am here to teach and learn alongside my students through this period of virtual and in-person learning as we strive for engaging, actively anti-racist curriculum that is open, welcoming, and equitable.

My Project

As my students face the imminent change to online learning, with COVID cases rising, we need to prepare to continue the rigor and engagement of in-person learning, remotely. My students deserve to see labs, to see their teacher writing in real-time, not just reading off of a slide deck.

While our learning has been effective, it has not been engaging, and my beautiful and capable students deserve an engaging online classroom that mimics the one they left in the school building.

Chemistry is a highly interactive subject, relying on models, drawings, images, and detailed notes. This is where the document camera comes in: I need to be able to draw with the same level of detail that I was able to achieve on whiteboards in the classroom, but projected online for my students. Especially for my SpEd and ELL students who rely on visuals and written words, this will be instrumental in their learning and engagement this year.
