COVID-19 was an unwelcome catalyst for many challenges, one of which being isolation. Children in my grade level missed out on the chance to interact in the early education years. This is crucial for social-emotional learning.
I read a powerful story to my class about a character who isn’t very welcoming to a new student.
After an object lesson from the teacher, this character decides to show kindness the very next time she sees her. However, in a sad turn of events, she learns this girl moved away- and her chance with it. Following the story, we wrote kind messages that we can share with a classmate today. We will put them in the seat sacks I’m requesting (I will proofread the messages first) so the student can discover them and be encouraged, a kind act that we will repeat throughout the year.
