Don't Bother Me, I'm Reading

My students need 9 non-fiction graphic novels to learn about history.

I am the librarian in a K-6 inner city expeditionary school. Our school has about 300 students and we emphasize high achievement through active learning and teamwork. Our students and teachers engage in learning expeditions, which are in-depth studies that address a topic or theme.

During the fall and winter, our school focuses on expeditions related to social studies. While I do my best to supply the library with books related to state standards in social studies, my budget of $1,000 per year can never buy enough books for every grade level. And of the books I do have, many of my social studies books are so dense and old, that my students have a hard time finding information that is up to date and valid.

One of my solutions to get the kids reading and researching is to purchase non-fiction graphic novels. Graphic Novels are a kind of comic book, usually with long and fairly complex storylines and often aimed at more mature audiences. My older students can't get enough of these books and they get taken out of my library as fast as I can purchase them. Even if a student isn't doing research, they still take out these books because they are interesting. The recent School Library Journal (November 2008) has done research on what titles they recommend to be the best non fiction graphic novels. They based their information on novels that were well researched and factually verifiable.

From this list, I have chosen nine graphic novels that I know would be used extensively in this library. These books are costly and I would never be able to purchase them with my school budget. My students love to read quality books and I believe these graphic novels would be a perfect and much needed addition to the library. Thank you for considering this proposal.
