This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When does joking around become something more serious? This is a tough question for school aged children with special needs. Many students with special needs have difficulty in social situations and either become victims of bullying, or bully others in order to fit in.
I provide special education services to some amazing students in grades 1-4.
These students have a variety of needs including learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, autism, and severe cognitive impairments, to name a few. They face many challenges and require different modes of instruction in order for them to gain access to an education. Many are English Language Learners.
Our school is located in a large urban city in CT. I have the rare opportunity of turning these students on to learning. It is a privilege to work with these special students who are near and dear to me.
My Project
Help my students learn social skills, build character, and lead our school in raising awareness about bullying. The materials I am requesting will provide a hands-on project that will have school-wide impact. The Bullying in Schools book will provide scenarios for the students to discuss, role play and problem solve. The students will learn what they can do if they are in a situation where they are being bullied. The construction paper, glue, scissors, and laminator will allow the students to creatively take a stand against bullying and raise awareness. My students will be able to show their artistic abilities and create original posters that will be displayed throughout our school. It will give my special needs students an opportunity to demonstrate their talent and leadership.
Students with special needs face challenges making it difficult to understand and relate academically and socially in school.
Many of my students are turned off by school because they haven't had much success. This project will teach my students social skills and problem solving for success both in and out of school.
"Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another." -- Marva Collins
