My Students
I work in a Title I school in Philadelphia. Almost all of our students come from economically disadvantaged households. Given all of the challenges, the students still come bounding into school in the morning ready to learn. There is a strong culture in our school of joy but also responsibility and respect. The students are engaged and the teachers are creative. Since the school is K-8, the older students are able to present themselves proudly and set a fine example for the younger students to follow.
My Project
I try to incorporate as many different art mediums as I can into my art curriculum. Students, ages K-8th grade, all enjoy using Alphacolor soft pastels. The soft pastel, or chalk pastel, is one of the messiest and most rewarding mediums that students use in my classroom.
Students love the vibrant colors and the softness of chalk pastel.
I have ordered two varieties, a color set and a gray set. The younger students will create beautiful artworks using the colored soft pastels and the older students will learn how to use value to create form by using the Hi-Fi gray sets.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
