My students are made up of a diverse mix of children who reside on the South side of Chicago. The children range in age from 2-5 years old, with a large part of the population being children with special needs. Our school is entirely early childhood, with five blended classrooms and two instructional classrooms. Our educational philosophy is influenced by an emergent curriculum based out of Italy called the Reggio Emilia Approach. Our curriculum is not only child-interest based, but relies heavily on the arts as an avenue for expression. Art materials, such as clay, wire, paper, paint, light and shadow, support interest-based work happening the classroom, as well as an avenue for extension and collaborative work between children.
A large part of our philosophy is that we believe in providing students with art experiences, where we use high-end art materials, to encourage theory development.
As the Studio Coordinator, I service all of the children in the school by working collaboratively with the teachers to create hands-on, authentic and child-interest based art experiences in the Studio. There is a rotating schedule where children visit the Studio to explore materials or have a personalized experience in small groups.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in our classroom because a large part of our philosophy is the belief that children should be offered high-end, authentic materials. In turn, the children's work will reflect the type of materials offered. The clear drafting table will allow children to use light behind the table while drawing.
In order to support their exploration with light/shadow and drawing, a clear drafting table will be the perfect addition to our studio space.
This piece of furniture will encourage exploration with different drawing materials and allow students a professional space to draw. Consider donating to us!
