My students need sheep hearts for dissection to improve their understanding of the circulatory system.

My Students
Students are busy in this classroom, and they don't want to settle for book-learning alone! They want real-life, hands-on experiments to further their science education and to bring the diagrams and written text to life.
I teach 5th grade in a highly gifted magnet.
My students are identified as having an IQ of 145 or above, and have the potential to be tomorrow's leaders. One third of my students are English Language Learners, demonstrating their brilliance despite a language barrier.
Because of their highly gifted identification, I make every effort to differentiate their curriculum to best suit their diverse needs. They are exceptional, but not just because of their intellect. They are truly a joy to know and I feel incredibly fortunate to be their teacher.
My Project
These sheep hearts will assist in our culminating activity for a unit on the human body. After students have spent 10 weeks on a simulation in which they become medical specialists, take board exams, diagnose patients, and conduct Grand Rounds, they will have the opportunity to handle a mammal heart that closely resembles the human heart.
The students will observe and dissect the heart and create a teaching video to document their discoveries. This lesson is strongly aligned with the Common Core standards in that students are actively engaged in their learning, asked to communicate and collaborate, and must use higher level thinking skills to make inferences.
My students thirst for experiential learning and benefit from it in indescribable ways.
To culminate a simulation with an actual dissection in fifth grade is an experience my students will never forget and may inspire some of them to pursue a career in the sciences. On behalf of my students, I thank you so much for considering our project.
