My Students

In my classes, students read and discuss novels and plays as a whole class while supplementing their reading with individual reading choices. I encourage my students to explore new genres and share their reviews of books with the class community.

Students at FHS are good-natured and full of school spirit; however, the community lacks diversity.

My students need exposure to high-quality texts from other cultures and other time periods to learn about perspectives different than their own.

My Project

With the books I am requesting, my students will study cultures and perspectives different from those in our community. Maus, an autobiographic graphic novel, will expose students to accounts of the Holocaust--its survivors and victims. A Raisin the Sun is a play telling the story of a black family moving into a primarily white neighborhood during a period of lasting racism and segregation in post-Civil Rights era in the U.S. The other plays, The Glass Menagerie and Death of a Salesmen, are highly esteemed "text exemplars" for high school core curriculum. Exposure to these classics will prepare my English and theatre students for their upper-level college preparation courses.

Funding this project will supply my students with the books they need to be prepared for higher level courses.

Our English closet has incomplete class sets, so there are not always enough books for all of my students. Often teachers supplement their classroom supplies with personal funds to provide students with the texts they deserve to read. This project will help both my English and theatre students have access to quality, classic texts for their scholastic studies.
