Within my two libraries and middle school Makerlab, my 800 middle and high school students research, read, work in small groups, and discover together. I want students to WANT to learn. I want them to become engaged owners of their learning, to pair the familiar with the unfamiliar, to create something brand new, and to learn from each other.
Our students come to the library excited to use tools otherwise not available to them.
We are a fund-deficient district, deeply feeling the effects of dramatically decreased funding at the state level. Gone is money for many items that would increase student engagement and foster a true love of learning and discovery. Nearly 60% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, which usually means that exposure to such tools is limited if not used in school.
My Project
My students are crazy about robots! This Hexbug kit, along with the accessories, will allow all students to create a robot, no matter their skill or comfort level. Whether they be a beginner needing the instructions to construct or a student ready to create the robot of her dreams, the kiddos will also be gaining hands-on experience with programming, coding, problem solving, creative thinking, and teamwork.
This Hexbug kit is a springboard into the mastery of 21st century skills for all of our students.
Our students are beginning to believe that they truly can make bring something from their imagination into reality...to be creators of things and ideas that currently don’t exist...that they truly are in charge of creating their own futures.
