To facilitate play therapy with elementary students, I am in need of a doll house with furniture and dolls. I am a school social worker at a charter school (grades K-8), located in Chicago's south side community of Englewood. I provide counseling services for a variety of students each year. The issues our students face include child abuse and neglect, domestic violence in the home, death and loss of friends/family, divorce, foster care situations, witnessing violence in their communities, etc. These difficult environmental effects result in many students with significant emotional issues and aggressive, destructive behavior. The doll house with doll family/doll furniture are key tools in play therapy sesions with younger students. The doll house is a safe & familiar medium for children in which they can "play out" with dolls the things they have experienced. This process helps the therapist understand things from the child's point of view. Play therapy provides opportunities for guiding children towards understanding and moving beyond their painful experiences. Adding this tool to the social work office will benefit all students in grades K-3 who receive counseling services. The effects of a positive therapeutic experience for an individual child are tremendous. Addressing traumatic experiences through play therapy helps children build a foundation of emotional stability, which in turn has a direct effect on academic acheivement. Please help me in my endeavor to help the most vulnerable students in my school achieve success.
