My students need transportation to become Junior Naturalists at the Vic and Bonnie Christianson Math, Science and Technology Center - An Outdoor Education Site
My students need a bus to learn about the environment from the environment.
Our students are a very eclectic group.
We work at a Title I school. This means a majority of our students receive free or reduced-priced lunches. Since the whole grade level is included, I do not have an exact count of boys and girls, ethnicities, or languages spoken.
My Project
We are an environmental studies magnet. I have requested a field trip so students can become Junior Naturalists at the Vic and Bonnie Christianson Math, Science and Technology Center - An Outdoor Education Site.
Being able to learn about the environment at this learning center will be of great benefit to our students. Many of them have never seen, let alone touched, some of these exotic wild animals that they have only read about. Being able to visit this free center will open the door into knowledge a great deal.
We could be learning about the environment from a textbook, but that is not as valuable as going to a learning center that has live animals and that is hands-on.
The whole second grade has an opportunity to go this LAUSD Outdoor Education and Demonstration Site, but we have no way to get there except with help from generous donors.
We are striving to make our students become stewards of the world around them.
Having them have firsthand experiences will solidify their understanding of what that means. These concepts can be so abstract to seven and eight year olds, but hands-on learning is long lasting.
