My students need sets of Place Value, Polyhedral, Ten-Frame, and Double dice to give them the opportunity to have hands-on practice with math concepts.
My students come to school with stories, full of energy, excitement, and a general love of being here! Everyday I say, "We are the super second grade!" and students respond with, "Yes, we are!" They come to school waiting to be built up in a world that is ready to criticize.
My hope is that I can build student's confidence and help them know just how super they are.
I teach in a public school where many of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of my students receive food on the weekends so we can make sure they have enough to eat until they come back to school. Many families need assistance with study trips, basic school supplies, and even winter clothing for their children. My students are all too aware of the struggles that will face them. I want students to know that despite these difficulties they are unique, teachable children with so much potential.
My Project
Everyday the students in my class participate in a Guided Math time. During this time of instruction, students work in small groups to practice critical thinking, problem solving, and math concepts. Students have the opportunity to practice, explore, and deepen their understanding of math concepts. To make this time the most beneficial, I always look for ways to keep students engaged. Games and dice help to make this a reality.
When students have the freedom to explore and learn through games they retain and apply concepts more readily.
When students have the opportunity to play these games they will not only be learning and reinforcing concepts, they will realize they are mathematicians and they are good at math.
My students will use the dice to participate in critical thinking and math games in a variety of ways. I envision students actively engaged in their learning while practicing and reinforcing crucial concepts such as computation strategies, problem solving, and critical thinking.
