Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my school love to read non-fiction topics such as cats and dogs. My school library has very few books on cats and dogs. My school library budget does not allow for many high interest books to be purchased.

I am a school librarian at an inner-city elementary K-5 school.

The neighborhood is high-crime and high-poverty. My students love to read. High interest topics such as pets are a big hit in my library. Many of the students look forward to their visits to the library. Having new books will keep them coming back again and again.

My Project

My students will be able to check these books out of the school library. Having high-interest new books make children excited to come to the library, and provides them with more reasons to read. Our school uses a literacy process called The Daily 5 which gives students daily reading time by themselves or with a partner. The children will use these books during this literacy time.

My library budget is very small.

Being able to provide these books for my students will allow them to improve their independent reading levels while learning about these animals. These books will engage them and increase their excitement for the printed word.
