This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a group of fourth grade students who are highly enthusiastic and eager to learn something new every single day! My students always try their best at everything and anything despite the challenges they face in their daily lives.
My students live in an impoverished area of South Los Angeles.
All of my students come from low-income families. We are a Title I school where one hundred percent of our students receive free meals. As a Title I school, we have limited supplies, limited resources, and are very low on the technology scale. My students do not all have the same opportunities at home and thus need to be exposed to as many opportunities as possible at school.
My Project
No more excuses! As a teacher, I hear different and creative excuses as to why the homework is submitted incomplete. With this project I want to eliminate all possible excuses and move on to obtain 100% homework from all of my students. All of my students come from low-income families and can not afford to buy binders, sheet protectors, pencil pouches, pencil sharpeners, crayons or any other school supplies. I want my students to come to class and be proud of their homework because it will be nice and neat instead of folded, wrinkled, or torn. The pencil pouches will help my students keep their small supplies (such as pencils, erasers, and pencil sharpener) organized inside of their homework folders. The sheet protectors are another important item that my students will use to protect important notes that are needed to be stored for a long period of time. My students will appreciate having crayons at home to complete art projects.
Unfortunately, most of my students do not have homework folders or any school supplies accessible at home.
They walk out of the classroom with their homework in their hand. The few that do have backpacks, don't have homework folders; Thus, they throw their homework papers inside their backpacks. With your help, I want us to provide the basic school supplies that are needed in order to successfully complete homework at home.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
