This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first graders who are VERY anxious to become better readers! We are a high-needs school, but like all six-year-olds, my students are motivated to learn, and their families are supportive and eager to help.
Choosing and independently reading "just-right" books are fundamental skills for beginning readers. In order for my students to make the tremendous progress that is expected in first grade, they need to read to themselves, read to peers, and read at home every day. However, our first-grade classroom does not have NEARLY enough appropriately leveled books to support my students' literacy needs. I am maxing out my public library card and using databases to determine the levels of books I check out, but despite these efforts, it is still a challenge to keep my classroom library stocked with the right level of books for my students. Please help us!
The leveled library I've requested will not only add much-needed books to my classroom, it will facilitate the children's independent selection of just-right books. The ability to select and read appropriate books will provide a HUGE boost to my students' literacy skills AND their confidence.
Your contribution to our leveled library will help my non-readers and emergent readers become confident, self-assured READERS. With these books, they will develop the literacy skills they will use every day for the rest of their lives. And they are SO EXCITED to develop these skills. Learning to read just opens up the world to children, so your gift will mean the world to them. Thank you! :)
