My Project
Students do a unit on sound where they figure out that sound needs air particles to collide and transfer energy for us to hear. We have a demonstration that sound still works when something is placed inside a container but only a video of what happens when the air is removed from that container. Students would benefit from observing the sound unable to travel without air in the classroom live instead of watching a video. In order to make this happen, we need the vacuum pump and vacuum chamber.
In the following unit, students learn about magnetism.
We place magnets inside a vacuum chamber to demonstrate that while sound needs air to work magnets do not. We need a set of neodymium magnets to use and work through the glass of the vacuum chamber. Finally, students learn that a coil of wire connected to a battery turns into a magnet. I would like to show students how devices like metal detectors work using that coil of wire.
