My students need a way to beautifully and creatively learn to document their learning and memorable experiences in first grade. They need a camera.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a room full of energetic, creative, hardworking students. Our emphasis this school year has been to create a growth mindset among all students. We have worked on becoming risk-takers, unafraid to try new things. We have come to the understanding that as long as we grow from our mistakes, our mistakes are acceptable.
I am looking for a way for my students to express themselves creatively, to be able to let their personalities shine, and a way for my students to be able to document special moments throughout their first grade year.
The demands and rigor of the Common Core standards have been challenging, especially for my English Language Learners. We have recently become a STEAM Academy, with no funding attached to the program. I am attempting to integrate technology and the arts through this project.
My Project
Our school has recently become a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) Academy. Throughout the year I am constantly taking pictures of exciting family events and learning experiences for my students. At the end of each year, I send home a small photo album for each child filled with first grade memories.
As a way to integrate art and technology, I have decided to seek donors for a sturdy, reliable camera that I can put into the hands of my first graders.
Capturing special moments of learning during the school year is only the beginning of our use of the camera. An amateur photographer has agreed to visit the classroom to share tips and suggestions on photography skills. We will also team up with a 5th grade teacher/classroom and create an end of the year project. Working together, our students will become exposed to the process uploading, editing and saving pictures. Using these images, the students will learn how to create an end of the year presentation with music.
This camera, this piece of technology, will expose the students to the integration of art and technology. The students will work as a team with older students to produce an end project which will be viewed and enjoyed for years. This project will also encourage me, as an educator, to have a growth mindset as well, as I will move from the traditional photo album to a higher use of technology. Who knows...we may inspire our students to become future movie producers, videographers, or photographers.
