My Students

We are a special-needs middle and high school in Westchester County, just north of New York City. Our students come from all over the area, from NYC itself to Suffolk and Rockland counties. While all of our students have a unique story that brought them here, we provide a unified therapeutic environment that enables each of them to get both their diplomas and real-world vocational experiences. We use a Positive Behavior Support (PBIS) system based on our name which corresponds to Respect, Effort, Acting Safely, Community, and Healthy Living.

Moreover, while we may be a special-needs school, the students that I work with are expected to take and pass the New York state Regents exam.

I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication my students display on a daily basis as they work to attain that goal. It is my job then to provide them with the best instruction possible, and give them what they need for success.

My Project

Hello, thank you for taking an interest in my project. When teaching a new skill, the second step, after introducing what it is that we will be doing, is to model the skill or activity. One of the main skills that I constantly try to model for my students is the ability to annotate, or take notes, while reading. A document camera would make this exceptionally easier for me to do and would allow my students to more clearly see how I actively read, which will then help them learn that skill for themselves.

Additionally, aside from allowing me to model and teach new skills, a document camera would also allow my students to more readily share and display their work with the entire class.

My students typically struggle in school, so when they do something well and put effort into their work I try to make as big a deal out of it as possible (as long as they are alright with the attention). Some of them feel really proud and happy to share their work with everyone. It makes the classroom a much more united and collaborative environment. Having a document camera for each ELA teacher will continue to help foster this proud/collaborative spirit.
