Maya Angelou said "When you know better you do better."ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ Our nation as a whole is struggling in math. My students are no different. Without access to essential technology and hand-on experiences in math, students will not be able to know math better.
I teach a lively group of inner-city sixth graders.
We have a high percentage of special needs students so it is particularly important that my students are exposed to hands-on activities and visual representations of math. My students struggle greatly with math concepts and many students have made it to sixth grade through appeals. 99% of students are on free or reduced lunch. Parents at our school are pivotal. They fought to keep our school open when we were put on the school closure list due to being under capacity. Our school is located in an area where we face competition from many charter schools. Teachers and administrators are working collaboratively and diligently to make our school the best place for our students. Our state has also switched to the common core as we are determined to enhance math capabilities for our students.
My Project
I am requesting an ELMO document camera for my students. As a teacher, I make a lot of puzzles and hands on games for my students. This document camera will allow me to project images of these activities onto the Promethean board so students will have a better understanding of how to complete the activity. Students struggle to understand multi-step directions. Being able to model directions is essential for my students to engage in activities and achieve optimal success. Document cameras are also an effective tool in reviewing homework and tests/quizzes. The teacher can confidentially show common student mistakes and exemplar answers. Students will have a better understanding of what a 'good' answer looks like. Algebra tiles are essential to deepening my students' conceptual understanding of algebra. The tiles will also give my students who learn best visually, an opportunity to grasp algebraic concepts more readily.
Your support will allow my students to engage in algebraic thinking at a more rigorous level.
The resources requested have a long life span and are not quickly out dated. These resources will give my students a chance to engage with cutting edge technology as well as classroom best practices. Many students have experienced a lot of failure in math. Having a document camera and hands on resources will allow my students a better opportunity to experience success in math.
