Doctor, Will Antibiotics Cure Me?

Help me give my students a real-world experience of testing antibiotics to fight bacteria and determine which is the best course of treatment for their patients.

My Students

Medical Investigator: solving medical and criminal mysteries one case at a time. My 7th and 8th Grade students step into the role of Doctor, Medical Examiner, and CSI Agent as they learn to diagnosis patients, test drug resistance of bacteria, investigate illness outbreaks and solve crimes

What I love the most about my classes is being able to expose my students to "science beyond the textbook" and opening their eyes to all the incredible ways science is in their world.

With over 70% of my students coming from free and reduced-cost lunch programs or other state assistance programs, my classroom is their best opportunity to be exposed to science beyond the traditional model.

My students are traditional a mix of cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. My classes are typically a 60% female to 40% male ratio. Our district offers "school choice" and 20% of my students "chose" us over their neighborhood school. Our program follows the PLTW program. We have been awarded the PLTW (Project Lead the Way) Distinguished School award 2 years running. In 2019, I was named an Outstanding PLTW Gateway Educator and I am our District’s 2019-20 Teacher of the Year.

My Project

This project is totally student-centered and designed to put my students into the role of lab technicians and doctors as they investigate different antibiotics to treat their patients. With these materials, each medical team of students will be able to test up to 4 antibiotics against 3 different bacteria. Combined with materials, we already have in class, students will grow bacteria cultures in Petri dishes, exam the bacteria cultures under the microscope, diagnose their 4 patients, test antibiotic options to "battle" their patient's illnesses, and prescribe the best medication to cure their patients. Designed to be hands-on and engaging, this activity is also "real world" and provides experience for my students to consider as a career.
