Doc My Paycheck

My students need a document camera for exciting classroom and school-wide presentations, created in each subject area, as we strive to create and pilot a Smartroom in our high-poverty school.

My high-poverty, rural classroom wants to embark on a mission to create one 'Smartroom' in our school, in an effort to lead our school and system into a 21st century community.

Funded by another source, my classroom was able to secure a Smartboard for our students to use and they were truly amazing in their interest in the new technology, and their ability to learn how to use it. I couldn't keep them away from it. As their ability grew, my principal asked our class to make presentations and demonstrations to share this technology with the rest of the school in hopes that our county may fund another Smartboard next year. We invited other classes and teachers to come in and see our demonstrations, and then allowed them to use it as well. As we worked the Smartboard, there were many occasions where a document camera would have helped to complete the project presentations. Without even knowing the technology exists, one of my students said, "too bad we couldn't take a picture of this and put it on the smartboard." So I asked my principal about the possibility of getting a document camera to complete our "Smart room" and she grimly said, "well our goal would be to first get a Smartboard for every teacher, and that's going to take many years..."

We have one more piece to make our 'Smart room' complete and that is a document camera. With this technology, our low-income students will be able to create unbelievable projects and presentations in all academic areas, teaching them the skills they need for the 21st century. Not only will my students benefit, but my entire school will benefit as we lead the front in educating other teachers and students, empowering them to utilize this technology as well. By being flexible and using open scheduling, the Smartboard in my classroom is being used all the time and the document camera will be used just as much by students from all grade levels. Not only will the students in my classroom benefit, but the entire school will greatly benefit by having this technology as well.
