My Students

"Life is composed of lights and shadows, and we would be untruthful, insincere, and saccharine if we tried to pretend there were no shadows." -Walt Disney

My students are high school students, grade nine through twelve, enrolled in a theatre arts course in Anaheim, California.

Many of my students are nervous to perform on stage in front of an audience. However, when my students are put in a situation where they play pretend whilst thinking no one is watching, they burst out of the shadows and into the light. Mask-work allows students to play freely in a controlled environment. When the part of the face is covered by a mask, the remaining exposed body parts easily perform with wild abandonment. The student feels protected and free from personal judgment underneath the mask. CA Theatre Standards to be met: 2.3 Design, produce, or perform scenes from a variety of theatrical periods and styles. 3.3 Identify key trends in world theatrical history from various cultures and time periods. 5.2 Manage time, prioritize responsibilities, and meet completion deadlines for a production.

My Project

My students will be studying the play the plays of William Shakespeare, specifically "Romeo and Juliet," "Much Ado About Nothing," and "A Midsummer Night's Dream." In these shows, elements of mystery and tradition will be explored through mask-work. Additionally, we will be exploring the traditions, style, and characters of Commedia dell'arte. Our goal is for students to design and construct masks to be used in performance demonstrating the style of Commedia within the context of Shakespeare. Students will trim and use the plaster sheets to create/cast their unique mask from scratch. Once the mask has taken shape, students will glaze their mask with tissue paper and glue. Next, students will decorate their mask with embellishment materials (rhinestones, feathers, etc.). Masks will adhere to a face with the elastic. These masks will be used in a performance for the high school students, parents, faculty, and surrounding community.

The world of theatre is all encompassing and just as diverse as our student population.

With your support our students will be able to utilize C.R.E.A.T.E. (Creative Resources Enabling Arts Through Education) synthesizing standards within the visual and performing arts.
