Do You Want to Build a Sandcastle?

Help me give my students a wooden tray for portable sand play, as well as kinetic sand and sand toys!

My Project

Living on the coast in Maine, many of my students are able to go to the beach in the summer. I love heading back to school, but I do miss spending time at the beach when summer ends. This project will bring the beach right into my kindergarten classroom, regardless of the season!

Having a portable sand tray will allow my kindergartners to work together cooperatively as they build in the sand; they will collaborate and use new vocabulary as they design and build structures, all while enjoying the feeling of having their hands in the sand!

My kindergartners will be developing fine motor skills and hand eye coordination as they work to manipulate the sand, and it will also provide another outlet for creativity.

We will be able to integrate our sand table with different classroom themes throughout the school year. For example, when we are reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, I will bury letters in the sand for the students to find! At times when our sand tray isn't being used, I'll be able to put the cover on it and store it, saving materials for later use, and maximizing classroom space!
