Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This project seeks to empower high school seniors to explore beyond the surface of their community to bring awareness and create change in a high-need neighborhood in California.

Our school has a computer lab with one non-functioning printer, faulty, out-of-date computers in the classroom with non-functioning printers and internet, 70 laptops to share among 2000 students, and one digital camera to rent out for the entire school. Many of our students lack computers and internet at home and are, thus, eager to work with technology in the classroom. Taking photos and videos of their daily lives has become a habit in the age of the multipurpose cellphone, however, the areas they explore, the sights they witness, and the memories they create are rarely shared with those beyond their circle of friends. This project seeks to give students an opportunity to focus their interests and concerns, especially in regards to their social environment, and then share them with their community and beyond.

With the use of two digital cameras, more students will have the opportunity to record their surroundings by way of video and picture, as well as record interviews with friends, family, neighbors, professionals, and more. Having live documentation of their research will encourage students to provide quality material especially since it will be edited and presented to their peers and their community. In a digital age, engaging in media literacy and becoming active researchers will educate our students beyond the textbooks in class, encourage further exploration, and prepare students for higher education and their future.

Your generosity will support students' voices and empower them to believe that their opinion and understanding of their world is genuine and should be respected. You will make it possible for the primary stakeholders in education, the students, to realize their role in their community and motivate them to act accordingly.
