I am a Special Education Teacher at Alain Locke Charter Academy located on the west side of Chicago. The school services a very high population of low income students. Many of my students (third to sixth graders) struggle with reading. Most of the books that are available for them to read have been in the classroom for a couple of years and they have already read them. The other books are too long or have too many words to keep their attention. I recently remembered as a child we had a SRA Reading Kit in our classroom. The kit had short reading passages and different types of questions on the cards. I loved using the SRA Reading Kit. I would hurry to complete my other classwork (correctly) so that I was able to use the SRA Reading Kit. We also used the kit for competition purposes; I can hear my friends saying, "What color are you on?" It was a very wonderful experience that I would love to share with my students. It would give them the opportunity to work independently and it will also be an effective tool for a reading competition. The kit can be used for years to come. Thanks for your willingness to make a positive impact in the lives of our students.
