I am currently a fifth grade teacher at a small, rural K-8 school. We have 290 students enrolled in the 2003-04 school year. Currently, we have a poverty index of 43%. The project that I would like to do for the 2004-05 school year is entitled "Do You Hear What I Hear?" This project consists of setting up a listening center for my literature circle groups. I will have approximately 5 literature circle groups that will be sharing different novels in the classroom. My goal is to have different literature circle groups use the headsets and books on tape in a listening center located in the classroom. While these students are listening to the novel on tape, they will follow along using their copy of the novel. While the literature circle groups are at the listening center, this will give me an opportunity to work with my lower level readers. In order for this project to take place in my classroom, I need one set of personal headsets found at Creative Educational Materials. This project will benefit approximately 38 students. I believe that this learning center will be a more efficient way of conducting my literature circle groups. The students will be able to participate without having to leave the classroom because of the noise level. It will also have an impact on my lower level readers because of the one-on-one- time that they will have with me.
