This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Karl A. Menniger once said, "Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force" I could not agree more!

Our school is located in a rural area and most of our students come from a low socio-economic background.

80% of the students in our school were on free or reduced lunch until our system recently began to provide free breakfast and lunch. My students are 90 of the most delightful children who are eager to learn. Yet, many go home to take care of siblings while their parents work the night shift. Most do not have computers, phones, or books. Also, this year our school has seen an influx of English Language Learners from Haiti and Guatemala, and many live in non-English speaking homes. These are just a few reasons why so many of my students struggle with reading. That is why it is so important to integrate reading as much as possible.

My Project

The equipment I am requesting will be used in small group stations where students will listen to downloaded books while they read. In addition, I often make recordings of classroom text and educational newspapers and magazines, such as Time for Kids that students can listen to. "Studies indicate that when students get off to a poor start in reading, they rarely catch up. Further, as they progress through the grade levels, the academic distance from those who read well grows more pronounced" (The Learning First Alliance, 1998; Rashotte, Toregesen, & Wagner, 1997; National Reading Panel, 1999; Torgesen, 1998 It is so important that every child I teach have an opportunity for success. No child should be deprived of the world of reading because of circumstances beyond their control.

Jacqueline Kennedy once said, “There are many little ways to enlarge your world.

Love of books is the best of all.” Your donation will help me to "enlarge" the world for my students by teaching them, not only how to read, but a love of reading as well. Only with reading, can my students be guaranteed the success in life they deserve. It is a promise I have made to them and a promise your gift will help me to keep!
