Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a brand new school in our first year. Our students come from a school that was closed due to poor performance. They are expected to read grade level text and they do not know how. But why should they be denied that experience? Audio books are a great way for them to have that experience.
My students have various disabilities.
Most of them have speech and language disabilities and cannot convey ideas or interpret the English language at a rate comparable with other students their age. A couple of them have Autism and learn best through using visuals and hearing information. Two students have emotional disabilities and struggle to control their emotions, often hurting themselves or others. They love to hear stories to calm down. Despite their various needs, the one need they share is that they cannot read but love being read to. I have portable CD players for each one of them, but I do not have enough books to go around. Therefore, I am asking for support with this project.
My Project
My students need a library of audio books so that they can hear grade level literature since they cannot read on grade level. With this resource, my students will have the opportunity to use audio books for various purposes. All of them will be exposed to rich language written on their grade level. Students who are auditory learners will be able to hear stories that they have never heard before and look at visuals that accompany these stories. Most importantly, the students that use the power of literature to calm themselves down will have the opportunity to take a book into our Cool Down Corner and listen to a great story as they recollect their feelings. Lastly, books on CD will allow the students to engage in conversation about the text and build their language skills.
Studies have shown that students who live in areas of high poverty will always have language delays, some delays as severe as two years behind.
My students will have the opportunity to hear text rich with language. This will increase their vocabulary. Once they have a better vocabulary, they can engage in more class conversations with classmates and other teachers. Lastly, they will get the opportunity to hear great children's literature in a quiet way with less distractions.
