Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The faces of the New York City classroom consist of students from Bangladesh, Yemen, Iran, Dominican Republic, Mexico and many other places to say the least. This is what my two classes of 6th graders look like. They have come to America for quality education and to escape unspeakable violence in some of their countries. Many of them speak very little English but are eager to learn speaks volumes. The photo is student created and won a prize for respect for all week. The students expressed themselves by identifying what respect means to them.
I've grown as an educator because of these students.
It's wonderful watching them progress in a country that offers them something more than their native home countries.
My Project
Each year brings greater challenges and demands. The 2018-2019 school year is no different. Students constantly ask to borrow pencils, rulers, glue and the list is endless.
To eliminate the constant need to borrow from their classmates or myself, the supplies ordered are sufficient for each group of students to keep on the desks.
Having a pencil, marker, glue stick and a ruler already at their seat eliminates the constant hand raising to ask; “Can I borrow?” The core subjects that I teach include Language Arts and Social Studies. Having a pencil, marker, ruler, sheet protectors for handouts will enhance the learning process. When students have their required materials, it leads to success and learning.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
