My Project
My name is Dhabran Hall, and I am an 8th-grade social studies teacher in Jackson, MS. I have a very unique collaborative learning-based classroom. Students work together to complete projects, assignments, and compete together in review games and activities for prizes. This style of learning increases student engagement and participation, as well as gives them a fun way to learn their social studies standards. As an incentive to complete work on time, perform on their quizzes, and win their games, I award them with snacks and treats.
For this project, I'm trying to obtain snacks to reward my students for performing well on their assignments and for winning class games and activities.
The students enjoy my class and the opportunity to collaborate, so extrinsic rewards will help push them to participate and engage even more.
What makes my students special is they are students coming from a low-performing school in a poor socioeconomic area. Our school has been rated an F for the past few years; however, when students enter my class, they don't see themselves as F students. They enjoy a different way to learn with the collaborative model of teaching and work hard during their group assignments, projects, and games. These snacks and refreshments will further motivate them to achieve and build teamwork while learning social studies.
