This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a South Florida institution located in Broward County, serving an extremely diverse ethnic population. We currently have over 600 students enrolled in our school of which the majority are from Caribbean or Hispanic cultural backgrounds. As a school located in a low socio-economic community, it is not surprising that 98% of the student body is on Free and Reduced Lunch Programs, and further, the school even provides dinner to some of the students as well.
The fact that our students have a rich cultural background however gives them a fresh and unique perspective which should be expressed in an advanced writing program.
Encouraging our children to develop strong writing skills at a young age can have a lifelong positive impact that makes them better communicators and better adults.
My Project
Imagine being able to publish your own book! The book binder will help students feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in their finished and completed work. These materials will help create a writer's workshop in which students experience first hand the joy of writing, revising, editing and publishing their work.
Often our students come to school without basic school supplies: Ballpoint pens, folders and highlighters.
The binder, along with the other writing supplies, will help our students create a finished project where they continually update, revise and then publish their work. Please help our students express themselves to become confident writers and communicators. “Our future depends on stories. As the world advances, literature has the ability to ground us—in our humanness, our imaginations, and our enlightenment.”
