Help me give my students a class set of scientific calculators. My classes have been using the same set for 9 years, and many of the calculators have not survived this past year.
Students in today's society are faced with so many more challenges than when most of us were their age. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school (over 85%), many of my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges, they come to school every day with a smile on their face, ready to be loved and learn. How can we help those students learn when they do not have the necessary materials to succeed?
The students in my classroom are students who have the ability to learn but do not have the support they need at home or the materials necessary to help them succeed.
For the past 27 years, my classes have served students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual, emotional, ASD, learning disabilities, as well as English Language Learners. Our school loops with our students; therefore, I will be their math teacher for both 7th and 8th grade. My classes typically consist of 34% Hispanic or Latino, 33% Black or African American, and approximately 32% Caucasian.
These calculators are a vital part of EVERY class to help the students succeed with our rigorous curriculum. The calculators will help solve higher-level questions within math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra.
