Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When you walk into our classroom you see 30 smiling faces who are eager to learn, share, and grow. My students are creative, hardworking, and fun-loving. However, many of my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. About half of my students come from multilingual households and receive free and reduced-price lunch. They may not have access to books, resources, and stories like other students in their school and district. This leaves some of my students relying heavily on their classroom and teacher to provide a safe place stocked with books and materials to discuss, learn, and grow.

Despite these challenges, my students love to read, they love to dance and sing, they love technology, and they love lots of positive attention.

As a teacher, I try to focus on the positive impacts I can make in their lives. Although I have no power over what happens outside of school, I can help provide a safe environment where students realize their full potential each day. Every single student has the ability to make a change not only in their own lives now, but also make a positive change in our society at large.

My Project

This year is my fourth year teaching! Over the years I quickly realized that the traditional way of teaching and learning is not the most effective approach for students. In order to meet the individual needs of every single student in my class I needed to think outside the box.

I want to provide a comfortable learning environment for all my students using Highly Effective Teaching strategies and an alternative seating arrangement.

Hopefully students will then become more reflective of how they learn best and also can take control of their own learning. Students can have the option to sit in a hokki stool if they need to move and wiggle in order to process what they are learning.
